Septmeber Services

September 12, 2010: “Water Communion,”

Bring water from you travels or from your home and share where you went and what you did and thought since the end of the church year. Once again we gather in community to celebrate the larger life and develop a kinder faith.

September 19, 2010: “Religious Diversity,”

As Unitarian Universalists, we are non-creedal, and non-authoritarian. And yet this is a special gift. Because we are no creed, we are freed from adherence to one form of religion and can find real inspiration in the great diversity of religious ideas.

September 26, 2010: “One Community— Many Perspectives,”

In any form of religion in which people are organized on democratic principles, there are bound to be differences of opinion. Today, we will look at policies that both allow maximum freedom, but also allow conflict to be mitigated and managed.

Life is not fair.

And God as the creator of life is often in need of a defense, of being justified, faced with life’s unfairness and evil. This is called the problem of theodicy, or why good things happen to bad people, and why bad things happen to good people.

March Sermon Topics

March 7, 2010: “Parenting,”

Parenting … I’m finding it to be one of life’s major challenges! While it’s also one of life’s rewards, I’m always learning. The ironic thing is, by the time we truly learn how to parent, the kids have flown the coup. So, we’ll pool our wisdom in this area.

.

March 14, 2010: “Progressive Religion,”

Progress means going forward in the sense of going forwarding a better way. Religion has often assumed that it already has the best way. So, how can there be a better way? I’ll try to show that there are better ways.

.

March 21, 2010: “Euphoria and Religious Experience,”

Religion is a comprehensive human endeavor dealing with all our states, from the sad and depressed to the glorious and euphoric. Religious scholars have looked into these ethereal states and I’ll present some of their findings.

.

March 28, 2010: Dot Thormaehlen “Empire and Individuals: Scenes and Stories from Israel/ Palestine,”

Hearing about “the wall” in Israel is different from seeing “the wall” and yet even more different (and difficult) is hearing and witnessing first hand the effects of “the wall” and other oppressive measures of the Israeli government on Palestinians and their lives. Giving a voice to the Palestinians that is different from that often found in distorted media images is important for UU’s when considering issues of social justice.
